iPad3-release.com, an updates website dedicated to the Apple iPad 3 tablet device, says that rumours of an Apple iPad mini device are starting to looking more credible.
“According to unnamed sources, component suppliers of Apple are gearing themselves up for the mass production of a smaller iPad, starting in September of this year,” reports iPad3-release.com.
This comes following reports from media sources such as Bloomberg that Apple have secret plans for a 7 or 8 inch tablet, due to be released by the end of the year.
However, iPad3-release.com believes that the planned device is likely to come with a screen size smaller than 8 inches, which is considerably less than the 9.7 inch screen on standard iPads.
Ever since its launch back in 2010, Apple have resolutely stuck to the same display size, although the latest iPad 3 does boast a pixel-packed, high definition Retina display.
Apparently, Apple is believed to be working in conjunction with LG Display to produce its iPad mini screens, meaning that the device may lack the high-definition Retina display of its larger cousin. Its believed that this design is almost complete, prompting Apple to signal to its component manufacturing partners to get ready for mass production of its smaller tablet.
Dan Lim, editor of iPad3-release.com, gave his own comments on the rumours:
“What we’ve heard from our sources corroborates over, well publicized reports that Apple is working on an iPad mini tablet. Its looking likely that it may hit the selves by the end of the third quarter – just in time for Christmas.”
However, Dan was quick to warn that just because manufacturers were gearing up for production, it doesn’t mean that plans can’t be altered.
“We’re expecting an October announcement about the iPad 3 mini, although we should bear in mind that Apple is notoriously unpredictable when it comes to new device releases, so well just have to wait and see,” he observes.
Regarding the likely cost of the iPad mini, Dan is more confident. Citing Sterne Agee & Leache analyst Shaw Wu, he says that the new device is likely to be priced comparably to the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire devices.
“It would make sense since I think if the iPad Mini would be introduced, it would go into direct competition with Google Nexus tablet and Amazon Kindle, hence the price has be competitive,” Dan notes.
iPad3-release.com stated that it promises to be first with the news, if and when an announcement is made by Apple.
