iPad Air Initial Sales Metrics Five Times Greater Than For iPad 4th-Generation

Market research firm Fiksu reports that iPad Air launch weekend sales outpaced the fourth generation iPad by a factor of five times, and was three times higher than the original iPad mini.

They note that expectations are high for the iPad Air, which hit the shelves November 1st, noting that even Apple CEO Tim Cook says “it’s going to be an iPad Christmas.”

To gauge the reception in the marketplace, Fiksu added two new trackers to their collection: one that compares adoption of the iPad Air to recent iPad launches, and one that tracks the current active usage rates for all models. When the iPad Mini 2 hits stores later in November, they’ll be tracking that here as well.

To create their graphics, Fiksu are sampling data from millions of iPhones using Fiksu client apps. The data updates hourly, so the current day stats are subject to change throughout the day. They’re also interactive – you can select a range to zoom in, or turn each data series on and off by clicking on the names in the legend on the right.

Data sampled hourly in batches of approximately 10M events from apps using the Fiksu SDK. These events include app launches, in-app purchases, and registrations, and are filtered to count unique devices. Devices using operating systems older than iOS 5 are not counted, and represent a negligible amount of total traffic.
