iPhone Camera vs. Top Tier DSLR In Picture Quality Comparo

If you’ve wondered just how good the iPhone 5s’s 8 megapixel rear-facing camera is in terms of image quality, The Verge has posted an excellent feature that should remove any ambiguity on the matter.

The Verge’s Sam Byford pits the 5s shooter against a professional grade Fujifilm X-T1 DSLR, taking near-identical snapshots across a range of day and night venues in Harajuku, Tokyo, and recording results that may surprise you. The X-T1 of course wins the bake-off. A point and shoot smartphone camera can’t be expected to match results enabled by interchangable lenses and an array of advanced exposure controls, but the superiority is not by as wide a margin as you might imagine, thanks to the iPhone’s powerful A7 SoC, and its excellent image signal processing aided by tight integration between software and hardware.

As Byford observes, “You won’t be surprised by which comes out on top, but is the differences enough for you to buy a serious camera?”
