Mac OS X Versions (Builds) Supported By Various Intel Mac Models

Apple Support has posted a handy resource explaining which Mac OS X versions (builds) originally shipped with or are available for your computer via retail discs, downloads, or Software Update.

Apple notes that some computers shipped with different Mac OS X versions at different times. When a computer is not bundled with a later version, a “-” appears in the “Later Mac OS X included” column.
The build information is available in the About This Mac window when you click the word “Version”.

Some Macs may include a slightly later build version (but same numbered version) of Mac OS X on the Install or Restore discs than was preinstalled on your computer.

Apple warns against using a Mac OS X version earlier than the one included with the computer.

If you’re using the Recovery Disk Assistant, you can only use the external recovery drive with the computer that created it.
