TSMC And Samsung Slug It Out For Apple A-Series Sysrem on Chip Orders

Digitimes’ Josephine Lien and Jessie Shen report that the world’s largest chip foundry — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) — is expected to scoop up a combined 40-50 of supplier orders for Apple’s next generation A9 system on chip that will power next-generation iPad and iPhone devices, according to unnamed industry sources

The reporters say TSMC is also believed to have secured all A9 chip orders for use in Apple’s next generation iPad devices, but lost out on the majority of Apple’s iPhone SoC orders for 2015, with Samsung Electronics winning the bulk of those contracts by offering chips fabricated using its new 14nm FinFET production process at the same price as it had been charging for units made using its older 20nm node technology. TSMC reportedly fabricates all of Apple’s A8 chips for current iPhone 6 devices.
