MacBook Sales Booming, But iPad Shipments To Drop To 55 million units in 2015 – Digitimes Research

Digitimes Research’s Joanne Chien notes that thanks to Sony quitting the PC notebook market and price reductions by Apple, MacBook shipments in 2014 are expected to grow more than 15 percent on the year, the highest growth among the top-10 notebook vendors at the same time as Apple’s iPad shipments are expected to decline significantly year-over-year.

Lookig ahead to 2015, MS.Chien says Digitimes Research projects further growth in MacBook shipments, but expects iPad shipments are expected to continue their slide to reach around 55 million units, which is of course no trivial number. However they estimate iPad shipment decline will reduce Apple’s overall shipments for the MacBook and iPad combined from almost 90 million units in 2013 to around 80 million units in 2014 and 70 million units in 2015.

What effect the rumored launch of a 12.9-inch iPad and a new line of MacBooks using 12.2-inch Retina displays in 2015 would have, is still an imponderable, but Digitimes Research doubts that it will stop Apple’s tablet shipments from seeing a major decline, and that the iPhone 6/6 Plus will continue to cannibalize iPad mini sales in 2015.
