Stir Kinetic Desk M1 Standing Or Sitting Desk Features Cloud Architecture, Updated Electronics, Faster Processing Speeds

The age of the standing desk is upon us, and according to medical research, it’s arriving none too soon. The World Health Organization (WHO), reports that 60 to 85 percent of people worldwide lead sedentary lifestyles, which makes these habits a serious public health concern, pointing out that physical inactivity can have serious health implications, attributing approximately 2 million deaths per year to physical inactivity, and issuing a warning that sedentary lifestyles could very well be among the 10 leading causes of death and disability in the world.

The WHO notes that sedentary lifestyles increase all causes of mortality, double the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity, and increase the risks of colon cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, depression and anxiety, and also estimated that nearly two-thirds of children are also insufficiently active, with serious implications for their future health.

Drs. Daniela Schmid and Michael F. Leitzmann of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Regensburg, Regensburg, Germany performed a comprehensive metanalysis of electronic literature in Cochrane, EMBASE, Medline, and SciSearch databases through February 2014 for published articles investigating sedentary behavior in relation to cancer incidence, including 43 observational studies, and representing more than 4 million individuals’ responses to questions about their sitting behavior and cancer incidences. The researchers examined nearly 70,000 cancer cases, finding sitting to be associated with a 24% greater risk of colon cancer, 32% higher risk of endometrial cancer, and a 21% increased risk of lung cancer, concluding that prolonged intervals of sitting and time spent in other sedentary pursuits is associated with increased overall cancer risk.

Dr. Jacquelyn Kulinski, a recent graduate from the University of Texas Southwestern Cardiology Fellowship Training Program and first author of a paper on the association between cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, and sedentary time in the general population published in the journal Mayo Proceedings, recommends “if you are stuck at your desk for a while, shift positions frequently, get up and stretch in the middle of a thought, pace while on a phone call, or even fidget.”

To stay active and combat sedentary behavior, UT Southwestern preventive cardiologists also recommend taking short walks during lunch and throughout the day, using a pedometer to track daily steps, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, hosting walking meetings at work, and replacing a standard desk chair with a fitness ball or even a treadmill desk, if possible. One remedial and preventative countermeasure frequently suggested is use of a standing desk when working with computers and at other deskbound tasks.

Los Angeles based Stir, creators of the Stir Kinetic Desk, have unveiled the latest addition to the Stir product line: the Stir Kinetic Desk M1. Joining the flagship executive model F1, the new Stir Kinetic Desk M1 offers a slim, flexible design and lower price point, thus enabling expansion of the Stir experience beyond the home and corner office, ready for full-office installations from 10 to 10,000 desks.

Like the executive F1 model, the new M1 is a height-adjustable desk driven by software that senses your presence, learns and adapts to your preferences, enables you to set goals, and actively reminds you to change positions while you work.

“The response to the Stir Kinetic Desk has been amazing; over the past year we have been flooded with requests to release a Stir Kinetic Desk in a form factor that would fit into even the largest office installations,” says Stir CEO and founder J.P. Labrosse. “Most important though, is that we really are changing the way people work. On average, Stir Kinetic Desk users stand for half their day, and 95% of our users move every day. This is a massive change, especially when compared with push-button and other manually height-adjustable desks. We poured everything we could into meeting the demand for this new product, collected tons of customer feedback and spent the last year scrutinizing every detail to perfect the M1.”

For consumers, the new Stir Kinetic Desk M1 has been designed with a curved, organic shape and gently sloped front edge that provides maximum comfort for users’ arms. The slim, flexible desk profile allows for the addition of a broad variety of accessories – this includes most monitor arms, keyboard trays and task lamps. Power cable cutouts offer cord management designed to keep the desk surface clean and clutter-free. The new M1 is 30” X 60” and can be quickly assembled by two people using the eight (8) provided screws and a single hex wrench.

Starting immediately, the new M1 and the F1 feature entirely new, custom designed electronics that provide a faster and richer experience for users. The latest processor is 4x faster and storage capacity has doubled. The new 5-inch LCD touchscreen has an increased resolution with a 360-degree field of view, significantly increased brightness, and an anti-glare film — all designed to make the screen much easier to read in office environments. Five-finger, multi-touch support has also been added, enabling enhanced support for gesture-based interactions. Finally, the electronics design includes a Single Board Computer (SBC) and is housed in a removable electronics enclosure making the desk upgradable in the field.

Stir Kinetic Desks move between user-selected heights with a double tap on the embedded touchscreen and remind you to move with Stir’s signature “Whisperbreath” function — a gentle 1-inch rise and fall of the desk surface. All Stir Kinetic Desks feature ultra-smooth, quiet, and reliable motorized legs that move the desk through it’s range, and have been tested to 30 years of equivalent life.

For large-scale installations, M1 is available in a rectangular shape in three sizes and edge types; though it can be manufactured with nearly any work surface, finish or customer originated material.

The new Stir Kinetic Desk line also comes with a cloud-based architecture. This allows for transferrable user data that can “travel” with workers as they move between desks within a company network, or around the world. Leveraging low-energy Bluetooth devices like Fitbit, the desk recognizes and can seamlessly identify one user from another, making it effortless for users to be logged in and out of any Stir Kinetic Desk. This advanced cloud architecture will provide the platform for more integrations and expanded features in the future, with Android and iOS compatibility currently in development.

Customers interested in purchasing an M1 can buy them directly from the Stir website: stirworks.com. The new M1 is also available for purchase through select Relax the Back retail stores. In addition, M1 desks are available through commercial contract furniture dealers across the country. Visit the Stir website for more information about contract sales and retail locations.
