Samsung To Be Main Supplier Of A9 Chips For iPhone 7

Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper reports that Samsung has beat out its chipmaking rivals, Taiwan’s Qualcomm and TSMC, as supplier of chipsets for the next generations of both its own Galaxy S6 and Apple’s next-generation iPhone 7 (A9) systems on chip (SoC), which will make Samsung the undisputed leader in the mobile system semiconductor business.

According to unnamed semiconductor industry insider sources cited by MBN, Samsung Electronics will supply A9 silicon for the iPhone 7, which is expected to be released sometime in 2015 — most likely in September if past history is any guide. Sole supplier of the A8 SoC used in the current iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, as well as the A8X variant that powers the iPad 2 Air has been TSMC, but MBN says an estimated 75 percent of A9 SoC production will likely be sourced with Samsung according to unnamed market analysts.
