Apple OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Update Released To Developers With New Photos Beta

Apple has released a OS X 10.10.3 Yosemite update beta to the developer channel, hopefully finally getting to the bottom of the WiFi dropout glitch and addressing sundry other bugginess that has plagued users of Apple’s latest OS X iteration. However, the marquee news regarding Yosemite 10.10.3 is that it includes Apple’s new iCloud-oriented Photos photography app for the Mac, which is intended to replace both the widely-used but generally unloved iPhoto, and the professional grade Aperture app. A public beta version is to be released this spring.

Apple notes that Photos for OS X has been engineered from the ground up to help you keep your growing library organized and accessible, and is equipped with powerful and intuitive image editing tools help you perfect your images.

Apple says that for the first time, iCloud Photo Library gives you access to your entire Mac photo and video library from any of your devices. If you shoot a snapshot, solum, or selfie on your iPhone, its automatically added to iCloud Photo Library as well so it appears on your Mac, your iOS devices, and iCloud.com. And since your collection is organized the same way across devices, navigating your library always feels familiar.

Also when you make changes on your Mac like editing a photo, marking a Favorite, or adding to an album, they’re kept up to date on your iPhone, your iPad, and iCloud.com, and any changes made on your iOS devices are automatically reflected on your Mac.

With the “Optimize Mac Storage” feature, all your full-resolution photos and videos will be stored in iCloud in their original formats, while keeping storage-saving versions on each device. When you make an edit, the original image will download automatically. You get 5GB of free storage in iCloud and as your library grows, you have the option to choose a fee-based plan for up to 1TB of storage.

Photos app also uses Moments, Collections, and Years views to automatically organize your photos and videos by time and location. Apple claims that with dramatically more screen space devoted to your photos, you can easily scan your entire library at a glance and quickly find the content you’re looking for using a new toolbar or even gestures to browse your photo collection via touch.

The Moments view groups photos that were taken around the same time and place, like an afternoon at the beach.

Collections are made up of distinct Moments that were taken at the same place, such as your weeklong vacation in the Southwest.

You can view your entire library in a mosaic of all the photos you’ve taken each year. Click on any thumbnail to bring up a preview, and scrub over the collection to see previews of every image. Click any preview to open it up.

With iCloud Photo Sharing, you get an overview of the photos you’ve shared with friends and family, and the ones they’ve shared with you.

Albums and Smart Albums you’ve created, as well as the preset ones, will automatically group your photos into Favorites, Videos, Panoramas, view books.

Choose Enhance to improve a photo with a single click, or use Smart Sliders to adjust lighting and color. Apple says Photos uses intelligent algorithms to analyze your image and apply the right mix of adjustments.

Photos also supports application of more advanced adjustments to your images. You can make precise edits by enabling the histogram, adding definition, reducing noise, and more.
