With a Mission to Make Mobile Free, Scratch Wireless Debuts New Value-Driven Smartphone

Scratch Wireless, claiming to be the world’s first truly free mobile service, has announced the availability of a new Scratch-enabled Android smartphone, the Coolpad Arise. The smartphone is equipped with the Scratch Wireless service, which lets consumers access unlimited free talk, text and data over Wi-Fi networks, without ever signing a contract or paying a penny for service. The Coolpad Arise is available for pre-order via ScratchWireless.com for $99.

Unlike pre-paid services whose costs can add up quickly, Scratch Wireless utilizes a Wi-Fi First approach that takes advantage of the fast-growing number of Wi-Fi network access points and hotspots to provide free text, talk and data when users are on Wi-Fi. Texting is always free whether on Wi-Fi or cellular networks. By selling high performance phones at a reasonable price without a contract, plan or requirement for paid access, Scratch is transforming the industry by taking the cost and complexity out of traditional mobile contracts and offering a completely free wireless service.

Coolpad, China’s third largest smartphone provider, offers high-speed smartphones at affordable prices. The Coolpad Arise, reasonably priced for any consumer, packs a powerful punch with a 4″ display, a rear camera and access to the entire Google Play Store. The device will also feature improved Wi-Fi call quality, multimedia messaging and seamless call handoff.

“By leveraging a Wi-Fi First approach to mobile communications, Scratch Wireless frees consumers of cell phone contracts and high-priced monthly bills, allowing them to take advantage of Wi-Fi connections already available in homes, offices, schools and countless public places,” says Alan Berrey, Scratch Wireless CEO and co-founder. “We know our customers appreciate value and we’re excited to offer this high-quality device at such a low price point, providing an unprecedented smartphone experience on the world’s only truly free mobile service.”

“As we look to expand our device offerings in the U.S., we chose to partner up with Scratch for its innovative service that takes the confusion out of billing in a crowded market,” says Brandy Kang, CEO and president of Coolpad Americas. “We’re excited that consumers will be able to get the same smartphone experience they love for a fraction of the price on the Scratch Wireless service, translating into massive monthly savings for their customers.”

As part of its expanded offerings, Scratch also introduced new data and voice passes for the times Scratch users aren’t on Wi-Fi and need to make phone calls or access data services over the nationwide Sprint 3G network. These new passes, which start at just $1.99 for 24-hour unlimited voice, were developed in direct response to customer feedback and present a more affordable and flexible option for Scratch users.
