Prospects Less Than Optimistic For Apple Watch Sales – Commentary

A commentary by Digitimes Editors Daniel Shen and Steve Shen notes that Apple Watch sales of have been frewer than expected, totaling about three million units in the two months since the device was released in late April, and projecting that while it will be available to more consumers around the globe at the end of June, sales prospects are still not optimistic.

Shen and Shen point to Google Trends finding that consumer interest in Apple Watch has been declining since April, now having fallen behind that of iPhone and iPad, which they interpret as an indication that market enthusiasm over the Apple Watch is fading rapidly.

While Apple has tried to position the watch partly as jewelry with its selection of bands and gold plating options, the commentators observe that while a high end traditional timepiece’s value may increase over time, the Apple Watch’s will decline because it is fundamentally still a technology product, a fact that in their estimation renders Apple’s strategy for marketing the Apple Watch “unworkable” — and while Apple is believed to have begun developing the next-generation Apple Watch for release in early 2016, they suggest that Apple will have to drastically modify its product positioning and price strategy in order to ramp up its share of the smartwatch market.
