Apple Releases OS X 10.10.4 With WIFi Fix, iOS 8.4 with Apple Music, And Safari Updates For Mountain Lion Up

On Tuesday, Apple released final versions of OS X 10.10.4 and iOS 8.4, as well as updates for the Safari browser for OS X Yosemite, Mavericks, and Mountain Lion.

The OS X 10.10.4 update focuses on fixing the notorious WiFi issue in Yosemite security (hopefully successful this time) plus other stability improvements, as well as bug fixes for Mail, improvements to Photos integration with iPhoto and Aperture, and other miscellania.

iOS 8.4 is mostly about integrating Apple Music and Beats support with iOS devices, although for those of us with minimal interest in those innovations, there are some non-music changes in the iOS 8.4 update as well, including ability to browse, listen to and download audio books from inside iBooks; books “Made for iBooks” now work on iPhone and iPad; a new setting lets you turn off the Auto-Night theme; you can now find and pre-order books in a series from your library; and a fix for problems downloading books from iCloud. iOS 8.4 is available for: iPhone 4s and later, iPod touch (5th generation) and later, and iPad 2 and later. [Editor’s note: expect a substantial performance hit upgrading from iOS 7.x or earlier to iOS 8.4 on prior to 4th generation iPads and the original A5 powered iPad mini]

The Safari updates 8.0.7, Safari 7.1.7, and Safari 6.2.7 for Yosemite, Mavericks, and Mountain Lion respectively contain manifold security fixes, including mitigation of four vulnerabilities (CVEs), including privacy flaws, an issue with PDF-embedded links leading to information leakage, and another bug related to arbitrary code execution.

These updates also reportedly improve performance by reducing Safari’s memory usage, and fix an issue that allowed a website to use JavaScript alerts to prevent users from navigating away according to Apple’s update notice.

These updates apply to only versions of Safari supporting Safari OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5, OS X Mavericks 10.9.5, and OS X Yosemite 10.10.3.
