US Justice Department iPhone Crack Without Apple’s Help Could Boost Security Market – Research and Markets

The United States Justice Department has said it’s gained access to an iPhone at the center of the security row between the U.S. government and iPhone manufacturer Apple Inc. The Justice Department had requested assistance from Apple unlocking the iPhone 5c used by San Bernardino shooter Syed Rizwan Farook, but the tech giant resisted, claiming that the request would put the security of all iPhone users at risk. In the end, the Justice Department was able to access Farook’s data with the help of an unidentified third party. The global mobile security market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 38.3% by 2018, according to a report available from Research and Markets, but this growth could be higher with the news that iPhone security has been cracked.

Background:

The Justice Department asked Apple to write new software to help the FBI break into Farook’s phone but Apple opposed, stating that such a move would pose a threat to the security of the hundreds of millions of iPhone users around the world. Last week, the Justice Department revealed they had enlisted the assistance of an unknown third party to access the iPhone, and today revealed they had accomplished the task and no longer required Apple’s assistance.

The global security software market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.11% by 2019, as noted in an industry report, but this forecast could be higher as consumers are likely to demand greater protection from government intrusions from security software service providers.

Similarly, the global security devices for the connected home markets is to reach a value of USD 7.7 billion by 2021, as forecast in a market report, but this could be higher due to the iPhone row. As integrated technology becomes increasingly prevalent in our everyday lives, the need to protect our data from both criminal activities and government snooping also grows.
