Feature-Rich Vivaldi 1.0 Web Browser Launches

After more than a year in public development and millions of downloads, Vivaldi on Wednesday April 6 released the first major release of its pioneering desktop browser: Vivaldi 1.0.

Vivaldi is a project spearheaded by Opera browser co-founder Jon von Tetzchner, who recalls that the original idea behind Opera in back in 1994 was to make a really fast browser, but efficient enough to run satisfactorily on modest hardware, keeping in mind that users are individuals with their own requirements and wishes. He says the Opera community initially stayed close to its users and its roots, innovated, and strove for excellence. However, by 2015 von Tetzchner announced that the browser he once loved

had changed its direction and sadly, in his estimation is no longer serving the community of users and contributors who helped build the browser in the first place, and that the natural conclusion for him and a development team of like-minded former Opera fans was to make a new browser “for ourselves and for our friends.” A browser that would be fast, but also rich in functionality, highly flexible, and put the user’s needs first.

I still like Opera a lot, but for the past eight months or so, Vivaldi betas have been a favorite go-to browser choice on my Macs, and I’ve found them fast, stable, and nice to use.

While other browsers strip down their offerings, Vivaldi adds features with powerful personalization options to help users increase their productivity and efficiency.

Here are some Vivaldi features:

Tab Stacks:

Feel like you have too many tabs open? Vivaldi solves that with tab stacks. Drop tabs on top of each other to create a stack. It’s the fastest way to reduce clutter and keep organized. And when you’re ready to switch between tabs, Vivaldi has a number of customizations for that too.

Tab Stack Tiling:

Have a big screen? Tile that tab stack and see multiple pages at the same time! With multiple tab stacks, it’s like having multiple desktops.

Sessions:

Take browser management to the next level. Save your favorite set of tabs as a session for later retrieval.

Notes:

The perfect tool for researchers. Mark a quote and save it as a note. Vivaldi can remember which site you were browsing at the time, and allow you to take screenshots as well.

Adaptive Interface

Vivaldi’s color scheme will adapt as you browse the web, much like a chameleon adapts to its surroundings. A clean and modern look complements the content. Facebook turns Vivaldi blue, The Verge will make it orange – If you wish.

Spatial Navigation

Say goodbye to tab-cycling through web page content now. You can move in every axis using the arrow keys. Get faster anywhere on the web page using your keyboard.

Powerful Bookmarks

How many bookmarks do you have in your browser? 56, 225, or 1056? If you use bookmarks a lot, you have come to the right place! With Vivaldi’s bookmark manager you can organize and access your bookmark efficiently. You can set your own tags and nicks for lightning fast access.

Web Panels

Web Panels allow you to view websites as a panel on the sidebar of your Vivaldi browser. Read news, follow conversations on social media, chat with your friends and much more, while using the main browser window separately. It’s the next best thing to having a “Boss Button” on your browser.

Quick commands:

Access open tabs, bookmarks, history, settings and more through a command interface.

Mouse gestures and keyboard shortcuts:

If you really want to operate the browser at lightning speed. Mouse gestures turn a flick of the wrist into almost any action in the browser. Keyboard shortcuts do the same with simple key combinations.

Speed Dial:

Your favorite sites and bookmarks easily accessible from any blank tab. Include Groups and Folders for even more Speed Dials

Better bookmarks:

Access your bookmarks from the bookmarks panel, bookmarks manager, bookmark bar and of course Speed Dial.

Web Panels:

View websites in your Vivaldi sidebar. The perfect way to browse tweets, Facebook posts, or chat alongside your primary browsing window. We like to say it’s the next best thing to a “Boss button” for the web.

Personalized:

Vivaldi adapts to you, not the other way around.

Vivaldi supports Chrome add-ons, although the developers hope you won’t need too many with so many features available out of the box.

Vivaldi’s UI uses React and JavaScript, as well as Node.js. The core of the browser uses Chromium, ensuring pages render quickly and accurately.

“So Vivaldi 1.0 is both a throwback and a look ahead,” says Jon von Tetzchner. “It’s a ‘Modern Classic’ designed to help our users get the most out of all the time they spend with their browser.”
