Bare Bones Software Releases Free TextWrangler 5.5 Major Update

Bare Bones Software has announced the release and immediate availability of TextWrangler 5.5, a significant update to its powerful, free, general purpose text editor for Mac OS X.

TextWrangler is a core component of my productivity application suite, and particularly useful for moving work back and forth between it on the Macs and plain text apps on the iPad synched via Dropbox. It’s also a vital tool for cleaning up text imported from the Web or other apps.

TextWrangler 5.5 offers numerous performance improvements, refinements to fit and finish, and changes to streamline workflow in specific areas, such as ‘Find Differences’. In all, this new version includes more than 250 new features, changes to existing features, and fixes for specific reported is sues. Version 5.5 requires Mac OS X 10.9.5 or later, and is fully compatible with OS X 10.11 “El Capitan.”

The updated TextWrangler application boosts performance in a wide variety of areas, with the result that many common operations are faster than before. In addition, TextWrangler 5.5 significantly streamlines the workflow for Find Differences, with changes ranging from an easier-to-use Find Differences dialog to automatic synchronized scrolling of the documents being compared within a Differences window.

Version 5.5 incorporates numerous refinements to the fit and finish of TextWrangler. Reorganization of some menus and elements of editing windows makes more efficient use of available space and reduces visual overhead, even as new commands are added.

Additional updates and improvements in the new version include additions to the FTP/SFTP connection interface, new features in the “edit” command-line tool, and a new compare options AppleScript property.

TextWrangler’s returning features include grep pattern matching, search and replace across multiple files, function navigation and syntax coloring for numerous source code languages, code folding, FTP and SFTP open and save, AppleScript, Unix scripting support, and much more.
