Evidence Surfaces Pointing To New A10X Chip For Next-Generation iPad Pros
Citing a job description for a Project Lead position at Apple’s Austin, Texas engineering labs, Motley Fool’s Ashraf Eassa deduces that development is progressing well on Apple’s next-generation in-house designed iPad system-on-chip, which he anticipates will be designated A10X.
It appears that the integrated graphics processing unit for the next iPad SoC has been completed ahead of tim time and has exceeded the company’s performance, power, and area targets “while simultaneously adopting new process technology and design tools.” Since the current A9X SoC used in the iPad pro models is manufactured using the 16-nanometer FinFET+ process, Eassa infers that the “new technology” for the A10X referred to could be a 10-nanometer process of TSMC or Samsung, Apple’s two principal chipmaking subcontractors.
Eassa projects that the most likely release date for the next tranche of iPad updates will be in early 2017, a year after the debut of the 9.7-inch iPad Pro and well in advance of the A11 powered iPhone 10th anniversary model anticipated for September unveiling of next year.
