SSD Speeder RAM Disk SSD Life Extender App For macOS Now Available From B-Eng

Fehraltorf, Switzerland based B-Eng has announced they are making their SSD Speeder app for macOS publicly available for purchase on their website. SSD Speeder is a RAM disk utility that prevents certain apps from executing excessive writing and reading on the SSD, making the drive last longer while providing a substantial boost to the Mac’s performance in general.

B-Eng says certain apps, like Safari or Chrome, make excessive use of the SSD, and since read/write cycles are limited in an SSD this excessive activity can shorten disk lifetime considerably. SSD Speeder allows you to redirect these actions to a virtual RAM disk, taking stress away from the SSD.

RAM Disks, as the name indicates, are logical storage volumes created using a computer’s memory (RAM) instead of a traditional hard drive or solid state drive. The benefits are easy to understand: RAM operates at speeds far beyond current hard drive technology.

A RAM disk is a virtual disk that resides only in memory, so it is suitable for storing data that needs to live only until you shut down your computer. Temporary files are ideal for this. Despite this drawback, there are still several situations that can greatly benefit from the speed of a RAM Disk, including using it as a Photoshop scratch area, manipulating large video files, or testing complicated databases. Just remember to copy your files out of the temporary disk before you reboot or eject the drive so you don’t lose anything.

Christian Schaffner, General Manager of B-Eng, comments: “When we installed Linux on the new Mac Book Pro, we noticed during that process that Safari makes excessive use of the SSD, caching data several times per second. Since the writing actions on a SSD cells are limited before it’s dead, lifetime of the SSD will be considerably shortened by this. On older Mac Books the SSD can simply be swapped with a new one, but we found that this will be more difficult – and more expensive – because the SSD on the new Mac Book Pro is soldered directly to the mainboard. This makes it incredibly fast, but way harder to replace. We figured that we have to do take measures to make it last longer, and since Safari is one of the apps that makes really heavy use of the SSD for caching data, we made SSD Speeder, allowing the user to redirect Safari to a virtual RAM with a single click, leaving the SSD out of the loop.”

Originally invented for their own use, SSD Speeder is now sold via the company homepage.
