New iPad mini To Have Oxide TFT Technology Retina Display – Digitimes Sources

Digitimes’ Rebecca Kuo and Alex Wolfgram report that AU Optronics (AUO), a supplier of panels used in the 7.9-inch iPad mini, is unlikely to land orders for the next-generation iPad mini because Apple will demand Retina-class panels based on oxide TFT technology and AUO is technologically incapable of mass-producing such panels for the time being, due to technological issues in using oxide TFT technology, according to Taiwan-based supply chain sources.

The Digitimes’ sources also note that oxide TFT technology is more an energy-saving technology than a-Si TFT, and will likely allow the device to have a longer battery life. Additionally, the next-generation iPad mini is also expected to reduce the the number of LEDs used, which should help in making the device lighter.
