Apple’s share of the tablet market continued to best all others with 55% unit shipment share in Q3/12, new data from market intelligence firm ABI Research reveals. Despite maintaining its lead for 10 straight quarters, competition from tablets powered by Google’s Android OS continue to eat away at Apple’s success. Fifty-five percent is the lowest share Apple has ever had since launching the iPad in 2010.
“With the introduction of a smaller, lower-cost iPad mini, Apple has acknowledged Android’s beachhead of 7-inch-class tablets, though at the same time, it has failed to deliver a knock-out punch through innovation, pricing, and availability during the most critical selling period of the year,” says senior practice director Jeff Orr. “Following Apple in shipment share this past quarter were Samsung, Amazon, and ASUS. Rather than steal share from Android, ABI Research believes the iPad mini has caused demand for standard iPad models to shift down-market. Limited availability of iPad mini could be the saving grace as end-of-year buying ramps.”
“Nearly 14% share was given up in the quarter to several benefactors, including Amazon, Google, and Samsung. Android now powers more than 44% of tablet shipments. As the OS of choice for the majority of device OEMs, we expect the Android ecosystem to continue growing in numbers new manufacturers, better device choices for reaching more markets, and more developers finding value from apps and content,” adds Orr.

Sofa Sunday Shopping Traffic on iPad Matches Record-Breaking Cyber Monday

Catalog Spree shopping data from Sofa Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, shows that iPad shoppers shopped on Sunday as much as they did on Cyber Monday, with both days sales growing substantially over 2011.
The term Sofa Sunday emerged in 2011 to describe the popularity of tablet shopping on the Sunday following Thanksgiving, reflecting the emerging consumer trend of using mobile devices to shop online from the comfort of home.
Shopping via the iPad is happening anytime, anywhere and has become socially acceptable even at times and in places where the traditional computer or laptop has not.
• Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Catalog Spree iPad traffic showed a minor temporary dip during the traditional mealtime (a Dinner Divot), in contrast with last year, where iPad shopping did not ramp up until evening.

• iPads have established a presence, as evidenced during Cyber Monday 2012, where Catalog Spree sales originating from an iPad remained strong all day, not just in the evening hours as in 2011.

Our holiday survey showed that 87% of consumers plan to shop from digital catalogs this year.”
Sofa Sunday also saw the rise of the new iPad Mini. Less than four weeks after its launch, the Mini is already accounting for close to 2% of total visits on Catalog Spree. This places the iPad mini head-to-head with the fourth generation iPad, despite industry estimates which projected full-size iPads to outsell iPad minis 3:1.
Catalog Spree’s Sofa Sunday Shopper Insight Report provides a closer look at the behavioral shopping habits of consumers, including information that reveals the popularity of when shopping occurs and what shoppers are looking for. Data from the report shows:
• Geographic activity: Shoppers living in New York City were the most active iPad shoppers on Sofa Sunday, accounting for the highest amount of traffic, followed by Houston, whose shoppers spent the most time within the app (90 minutes on average).
• Shopping app usage: The most popular time for sofa shopping occurred between 5 – 6 PM PT.
• Top categories shopped included: Womens clothing; home dcor; kitchen, bed and bath; womens accessories; shoes and gadgets (tied for fifth).
• Top product picks: From more than 200,000 products on Catalog Spree, the top three most popular products on Sofa Sunday included the Minted Pastoral Noel Perfect Party suite, the Fresh Finds Pet Cave Bed and the Sharper Image Solar Powered Hydrogen Car.
