The Snugg Investigates How Smartphones Have Changed the Way We Cook

Just under a quarter of people admit to taking a photograph of their dinner at a restaurant, according to a survey by AllRecipes.com – but how many people use their smartphone in their own kitchen?

“The cookery show has been experiencing a sustained period of popularity for some time. While people can’t afford to go out and eat fancy meals they see on TV, they are becoming more inclined to recreate dishes in their own home.”

At a time when people find themselves with a little less disposable income, nights out at fancy eateries are often the first things to go.

People are now more willing to invest time, money and effort to their own creations – and as a result, the home-cooking industry has been experiencing a mini boom.

Although The Snugg found the cookbook industry has been affected very little by the popularity of tablet computers and smartphones, an increasing number of people are confident turning to technology when behind the stove.

Les Yates, The Snugg’s Marketing Manager says:”The cookery show has been experiencing a sustained period of popularity for some time. While people can’t afford to go out and eat fancy meals they see on TV, they are becoming more inclined to recreate dishes in their own home.

“We have found that cooking shows, like Rachel Ray’s 30 Minute Meals, can actually inspire people to make purchases. According to a survey by Harris Interactive, 57 per cent of those who regularly watch say they have purchased food as a direct result of something they’ve seen on TV.

“The amount of different apps available to amateur chefs today is mind boggling. If someone isn’t sure how long they should take to boil an egg, all it takes is a quick download and the information is right in front of you – readily adjustable to the size of egg. The same applies for cooking steak and other foods.”

People are still heading out to buy glossy, high quality cookbooks but the study found that more people are integrating their smartphone into their day to day life. For example, some applications allow users to combine shopping lists, grocery coupons and potential recipes within a couple of swipes of a finger.

Once people get home from the supermarket, they can be guided through the recipe, step by step with the help of audio and video instructions. To read the full article, head here:
