Samsung And Globalfoundries To Get Lion’s Share Of Apple A9 Chipset Orders – Report

Digitimes’ Josephine Lien and Jessie Shen report that according to unnamed industry sources, Samsung Electronics and Globalfoundries have secured a combined 70 percent of Apples A9 mobille devide chipset orders to be fabricated using 14nm FinFET technology,.

Lien and Shen say Samsung will be capable of producing an estimated 30,000-40,000 12-inch wafers monthly manufactured using its 14nm process node to fulfil demand from both Apple and Samsung’s own handset division, according the sources, and will also build its next-gen Exynos processor on the 14nm process technology.

Meanwhile, the reporters say Globalfoundries will be used by Samsung as a backup fab for Apple’s 14nm A9 chips, with monthly production capacity estimated at 20,000-30,000 wafers by the sources, whi also told them that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), maker of all \ Apple’s A8 chips for the iPhone 6, will receive the remaining 30 percent of next-generation A9 chip orders to be fabricated using with its 16nm FinFET process,.

Lien and Shen note that the Globalfoundries/Samsung collaboration to deliver global capacity for 14nm FinFET process technology developed by Samsung and licensed to Globalfoundries was announced In April 2014.
