Nuance PDF Converter for Mac Version 3 – ‘Book Mystique Review

Nuance PDF Converter for Mac version 3 enables Mac users to edit and securely share PDF files at a substantially lower cost than Adobe’s category-defining Acrobat application. Using Nuance’s OmniPage OCR technology, PDF Converter for Mac also accurately converts PDFs into editable formats.

PDF Converter for Mac features include industry-standard PDF viewing, editing, and security, and the program’s editing capabilities include search and replace text, text redaction, and creation of editable contents. With 256-bit encryption, PDF Converter for Mac enables editing and secure sharing of PDF files for $99 – a fraction of the price of Adobe Acrobat which lists for $449.

Ninety-nine bucks is still pretty expensive for the amount of use that most non-business or non-institutional Mac users would likely get out of it, especially with Apple’s strong support for basic PDF creation and viewing in OS X. However for small business and home office users, or anyone who needs the capability to edit PDFs, advanced PDF creation tools, OCR support, form tools, and robust encryption it’s something of a no-brainer, representing a significant saving compared with the cost of Acrobat, and from what I’ve been able to discern, still offering plenty of user friendly functionality.

Speedy and stable too. I encountered no flakiness checking its features out.

This latest version of Nuance PDF Converter for Mac includes direct connections to Cloud services, making it possible to access and save PDF documents with Nuance PaperPort Anywhere and Evernote services from any Internet connected computer. As noted, this new release also has built-in optical character recognition (OCR) capabilities to create searchable PDFs and seamlessly connects to Nuance’s OmniPage Document Conversion service in the Cloud to offer one-click conversion of PDF files into formatted word processing and spreadsheet documents. Another new Version 3 feature is FormTyper, which automatically converts PDF and scanned paper forms into professional looking electronic forms that can be filled, saved and shared online.

Nuance PDF Converter for Mac can display individual pages of a PDF document, or side-by-side facing pages.

My only major complaint logged about this program is that at least on my 13-inch MacBook, its user interface displays PDF document pages really, really small. However, to be fair, most users of this software will be using it on Macs with large desktop monitors.

“Apple is gaining a significantly larger presence in business environments, increasing the demand for powerful and affordable productivity applications for PDF documents,” says Robert Weideman, senior vice president and general manager, Nuance Document Imaging division. “Nuance PDF Converter for Mac delivers the rich features people want in a PDF product at a fraction the price of Adobe Acrobat. It’s no wonder people say this is the Better PDF for Mac.”
