Sharp To Show Off OLED ‘Retina’ Laptop Display

Apple is widely anticipated to make “Retina” grade display resolution a marquee feature of the next generation MacBook Pros, and perhaos MacBook Airs as well. However, PC Ultrabook competitors may not be far behind.

The Register’s Tony Smith saysz that if having 3840 x 2160 resolution display in your next 13-inch laptop appeals, a new Sharp prototype panel should be of interest — a 13.5-inch display containing just under 8.3 million white OLED pixels filtered for RGB colour, yielding a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch – which is what the iPhone 4S “Retina” display currently offers.

Smith notes that the Sharp screen uses the company’s IGZO (Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide) thin-film transistor tech which is able to present pixels too small to be distinguished one from another, and says Sharp will also be showing off a 6.1in 2560 x 1600 IGZO LCD for handsets and small tablets with a pixel density of 498ppi, and a 326ppi, 540 x 960 bendy 3.4in OLED and a 5in 720p LCD for smartphones at the annual Society for Information Display (SID) conference.
