Women Buy Silver iPhone 5s, Men Buy White iPhone 5c – Space Gray iPhone 5s Most Popular Overall

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, LLC (CIRP), has released initial results from its research on Apple, Inc. for the iPhone 5s and 5c launch on September 20, 2013. In one of the most talked-about subjects during the launch, CIRP has determined which colors of iPhone 5s and 5c sold best in the month following the launch. This data comes from a more-detailed complete survey of iPhone 5s and 5c buying behavior, available to CIRP clients now.

Apple sells the flagship iPhone 5s in three colors: Space Gray, Silver, and Gold. The iPhone 5c comes in five colors: Blue, White, Green, Pink and Yellow. For the iPhone 5s, Space Gray accounted for 43% of all iPhone 5s sales during the month. For the iPhone 5c, Blue and White had similar shares overall, at 27% and 25%, respectively, while Yellow had by far the lowest share, at 7% overall (see charts).

Among men and women, color choices did vary significantly in some instances. For the iPhone 5s, men preferred Space Gray, while women preferred Silver (see chart). The Gold iPhone 5s, which was originally reported in short supply, accounted for 27% of sales, was equally popular among men and women.

[Editor’s note: My guess is that Gold will do better when when supply catches up with demand. CM]

Colors for the iPhone 5c also varied by gender. Males favored White and Blue models (32% for each color), while women favored Pink (34%). Yellow had similarly low shares for both men and women (see chart).

CIRP Partner and Co-Founder Mike Levin says, “iPhone 5s and 5c colors seem to confirm some traditional gender biases. In the iPhone 5c, men prefer the neutral white, and the Space Gray in the iPhone 5s. In contrast, women prefer lighter silver 5s and the brighter iPhone 5c colors. Interestingly, no one, including the women in the survey, appears to want the Yellow iPhone 5c very much.”
