Vendors, Software Developers Flocking To Android OS – Digitimes Research

Digitimes Research’s Danny Kuo reports that due to the fast-growing Android ecosystem, most software developers have no choice but to support Android OS in order to avoid of being marginalized.

For instance, he says MIPS Technologies has made its CPU architecture capable to execute Android OS, and BlackBerry’s Playbook tablet is compatible with Android’s applications, while
Intel has also made its x86-based CPUs compatible with Android, and has cooperated with Asustek Computer to launch dual-OS transformer tablets. The chipset vendor has also incorporated its Atom family products with Android OS for production of mobile devices such as Asustek’s ZenFone-series smartphones.

Kuo cites recent market data showing that Android-based smartphones accounted for as high as 76.82% of total global smartphone shipments in 2013, and tablets run on Android OS also accounted for 51.28% of global tablet shipments in the first quarter of 2014.
